Job Description

We’re seeking an experienced Lead Protection & Controls Engineer to join a leading US turnkey energy solutions company. With a growing pipeline of EPC projects, this organisation has built its own integrated EPC team to deliver world-class substation and energy solutions.

As the Lead P&C Engineer, you will oversee technical execution within the substation group while collaborating closely with EPC teams and clients. This role combines project leadership, advanced design work, and mentoring to ensure engineering excellence across all deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical scope, budget, and schedule for assigned EPC substation projects, including change management and client engagement
  • Provide oversight for substation design and integration, supporting internal engineering capability growth
  • Deliver and review electrical designs: substation layouts, single-lines, schematics, equipment sizing, and system studies
  • Develop technical documentation including load lists, equipment specs, data sheets, and bid evaluations
  • Act as Engineer of Record when required, ensuring compliance and technical accuracy
  • Collaborate across EPC teams to resolve RFIs, review deliverables, and support procurement
  • Review vendor documents for alignment with technical specifications
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a high-performance culture
  • Drive standardisation of engineering practices and documentation
  • Identify opportunities to improve quality, customer satisfaction, and efficiency
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, standards, and tools
  • Conduct and lead quality reviews of engineering deliverables

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 6+ years of experience in substations, switchyards, or power generation
  • Proficiency in electrical design: grounding, single-line, schematics, motor control, and protection systems
  • Skilled in power system studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, harmonics, grounding)
  • Knowledge of high/medium/low voltage equipment and protective relay programming
  • Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, API standards
  • Strong project management skills: scope, budget, and schedule
  • Experienced mentor with a focus on quality and standardisation
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
  • Experience with relay software, SCADA/HMI systems (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk)
  • Familiarity with Aconex, VMWare, and EPC procurement/construction processes
  • Client-side or owner’s engineer exposure a plus
  • Active participation in industry organisations encouraged
